Ultrasonic Inspection Procedure for Measuring the Wall Thickness of Thermowells in High Pressure Steam Lines

This special ultrasonic probe and procedure was developed to locate areas in thermowells where erosion from solids in the high velocity steam had caused rapid and unexpected thinning of the wall of thermowells in a high pressure feed line. The probe was successfully used in spite of significant bending of the thermowells caused by the creep from the force of the steam flowing on the upstream side of the thermowell.
